چکیده

Chromium, especially the hexavalent form, is toxic to humans. Industries like chrome plating, textile, electroplating discharge Cr(VI) in their effiuents. Wastes containing chromium are environmentally persistent and toxic, and cannot be degraded or detoxified biologically. Various techniques developed for the removal of heavy metals include chemical precipitation, ion exchange and adsorption. Activated carbon adsorption systems though widely used are very expensive and the regeneration cost is also very high. Therefore, their use in wastewater treatment may not be economically feasible. There is, therefore, a need to identify and study adsorptive characteristics of low cost alternatives. The present investigation was, therefore, undertaken to select suitable locally and commercially available adsorbents such as activated alumina, ion exchange resin, with special attention to low cost adsorbents like saw dust, treated saw dust and sand, and to carry out a comparative study of their applicability to heavy metal removal. The results of these studies are presented in this paper.

Removal of Chromium (VI) metal ions from waste water using alternative adsorbents - A comparative study

Alternative adsorbents like Activated charcoal, modified activated charcoal, wheat bran, activated neem leaf powder and groundnut shell powder were used as adsorbents for effective removal of Cr (VI) ions and thus a comparative study between the adsorbents are presented. Waste water containing Cr (VI) ions was treated with all adsorbents for a calculated amount of time. Further, filtration was ...

Adsorptive Removal of Cr(VI) and Cu(II) Ions from Water Solution using Graphene Oxide-Manganese Ferrite (GMF) Nanomaterials

Chromium (Cr) and copper (Cu) are heavy metals known for their dangerous effect towards human health and could enter into human body mainly through ingestion. Over the years, different treatment methods have been used to eliminate heavy metal from raw water source and these include (co)precipitation, coagulation/flocculation, adsorption and ion- exchange. Nonetheless, adsorption is the most pro...

Experimental Study on Removal of Chromium by using Cow Dung as Low Cost Adsorbents

In apparent, the intension is removal of chromium using cow dung as low cost adsorbents from the industrial wastewater. Chromium (Cr) is one of the most toxic substances and is introduced into the environment through a variety of industrial activities. In order to remove the chromium from the contaminated water there are lot of methods available, even though they are not in natural way. In the ...

Potentiality of agricultural adsorbent for the sequestering of metal ions from wastewater

The expensive nature of metal ions detoxification from wastewater have restricted the use of conventional treatment technologies. Cheap, alternative measures have been adopted to eliminate metal contamination, and adsorptions using agricultural adsorbents seem to be the way forward. The use of agricultural adsorbents for cadmium (II), copper (II) and lead (II) ion removal has gained more intere...

Comparative and Competitive Study of LDH/Diatomite and Chitosan/Diatomite for Adsorptive Removal of Chloride Ion from Aqueous Solution

In this work, two clay-based composites are prepared for the adsorptive removal of the chloride ions from aqueous solutions. These composites are characterized through Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The effects of different parameters such as the contact time, amount of adsorbent, chlo...
